Lis helped me heal my back pain during pregnancy, & I always got my best sleep the night after her classes. Going to Lis’ pregnancy yoga class was like treating myself to a mini vacation each week. I always felt so relaxed and happy afterward..
Enjoyed the prenatal classes. It was great to connect with other pregnant women, and to connect with ourselves and our babies as well. I think that I used many aspects of the class that carried over to the birth. Really connecting with your breath and focusing on the present was helpful when labor started. Even though I had a c section I did go into labor and I was actually extremely relaxed during that. I feel that yoga was an integral reason for that!
Oh Lis, I absolutely loved your class. I always left feeling at peace, relaxed, and even rejuvenated. … I’m a little sad that prenatal yoga stops when the baby comes. Thanks for being a great instructor!!
I thoroughly enjoyed your class. It allowed me a peaceful moment once a week to focus on the baby inside and myself which is difficult with a kiddo at home. I appreciated the patience you allowed for me since I was not very experienced (or) flexible. I also enjoyed the varying focus.
I took prenatal yoga with Lis throughout my pregnancy too, and it was so great. She is an amazing yoga instructor and taking that little bit of time each week to meet and practice with her and other expectant mamas was wonderful; a focal point of my week!
On Doula Work
Lis helped me bring my baby boy, Asa Heard Karchmer, into this world on New Year’s Day (2012). I got to know Lis while taking her prenatal yoga classes in Boone, NC where we live. I was impressed by her calm, direct, and caring manner, her sense of humor and easy laughter, the love she shared with her baby son, and the way she reinforced (through yoga practice and doula-ing) what I already knew as a second-time mom: the real secret is to trust your body. In yoga and in labor, honoring, trusting and surrendering to your body is what Lis helped me do. I was preparing for my second natural childbirth, which Lis supported and encouraged, but I was impressed and grounded by Lis’s openness to all women’s choices for a variety of birth experiences — including those events we don’t choose. When my baby was born with an unexpected congenital heart defect, requiring emergency open heart surgery at one week old, Lis was there for me on the phone, by email, and even drove 4 hours round trip to the Children’s Hospital (with her own baby) to visit us, bringing me a basket full of nurturing gifts for breastfeeding, self-care, and staying sane in the midst of crisis. She is strong, full of joy, and deeply committed to assisting women in whatever kinds of birth experiences life delivers to us. I cannot recommend her highly enough. My husband, two sons and I, all adore her.
I met Lis at at a prenatal yoga class she taught and really fell in live with the soothing, positive qualities of her voice. This was going to be my 2nd time down this path and I really wanted to have support again during the labor and delivery of my son for both myself and my husband. We chose correctly, I realized what a wonderful person Lis was and how she was there before during and after. She allowed the experience to happen and was very present in a noninvasive way which was very important to me. I would highly recommend Lis to anyone seeking a doula.
Lis was my birth Doula for my second baby, now three months old. I hired her when I was around 5 or 6 months pregnant and am so grateful for it! Lis was there for me throughout my pregnancy with advice and help~she even came to visit me in the hospital when I was taken in overnight and put on rest. She helped me write my birth plan and brought up issues I had not considered, even though this was my second baby! I had several false labor alarms and each time Lis was waiting by the phone and ready to go~and there to help me figure out that it was not time to go! When I finally was ready to go to the hospital, Lis beat me there. I had quite a fast labor, but she was there every step of the way, reminding me to breath and helping with relaxation and exhalation techniques. Although I had my mother, husband and midwife with me for the birth, it was really nice to have Lis there too. She is so passionate about pregnancy, labor and babies and you can tell that she truly LOVES assisting Mamas with this special time in their lives. I know that choosing a Doula is a very personal thing and that each person must find the perfect match for themselves, but I’m pretty sure if you meet with Lis you will want her as your Doula.
Lis supported both my partner and I throughout my pregnancy, labor, delivery, and beyond. As a first time mom everything was completely new, incredibly exciting, and utterly terrifying at times – Lis was there for me through it all. She always made herself available via phone, email, text or in person to answer any questions, listen to my concerns, and provide support. My partner and I met with her a few times to discuss our birth wishes and the role we hoped she would play as our support and friend throughout the entire adventure. My labor and delivery was incredibly fast and Lis was ready to play whatever role we needed. I found that what I needed most was someone to talk to, someone to reassure me that everything was okay and that I was doing great. Lis brought an amazingly calm and strong presence into the room, cheering me on with love and compassion. Lis’ passion for pregnancy, childbirth, and family is strong and deep. She is a wonderful doula, and I highly recommend her.
Lis is rad! As first time parents, my lady friend and I were totally blind on what to expect from a natural childbirth. Lis was calm, caring, and helpful throughout the pregnancy, always there to offer encouragement or just to listen. She seemed totally willing and capable of taking the front seat or happy to blend into the background and provide support during the delivery, which was perfect for us not knowing what we would want or need from a doula. The role she played in providing both of us with peace of mind and support was invaluable. And knowing that I had some backup in case I puked on my shoes and passed out was also reassuring. Thanks Lis! Highly recommended!
I’ll never forget that moment in labor when she walked in and lit up the hospital room with her smile. It was like a burst of sunshine coming in to give me strength. Lis’ calming presence and wise words helped me connect to my pregnancy in such a beautiful way.
